Through its offices in Memphis and Knoxville, UTRF manages the commercialization of inventions and discoveries developed across the UT system. UTRF’s technology transfer objective is to identify and protect UT intellectual property that could form the basis of new commercial products and services, and to find private sector partners to bring those products and services to market. UTRF also uses its status as an independent non-profit corporation to support special projects that help UT fulfill its research and economic development missions.

Job Functions/Responsibilities
Technology Manager/Associate/Assistant Technology Manager:
University of Tennessee Research Foundation (on the campus of the UT Health Science Center in Memphis, TN)
The Memphis office of UTRF is seeking a Technology Manager/Associate/Assistant Technology Manager with a background in life science or chemistry to manage the commercialization of early-stage discoveries. Reporting to the Vice President, the Technology Manager will be involved in all aspects of the technology transfer process.
Specifically, the Technology Manager will be responsible for:
- Building relationships with research groups to identify new intellectual property.
- Performing comprehensive and strategic evaluations of inventions and other intellectual property, including determinations of patentability, commercial potential, and path-to-market.
- Managing patent preparation and prosecution. This includes selection of external patent counsel, working with the researchers and patent coordinator to file applications prior to publication dates, and overseeing ongoing prosecution.
- Developing and deploying marketing campaigns to attract industry partners.
- Negotiating commercialization agreements, including preparing and exchanging term sheets, contract drafting (from templates), and direct negotiation with prospective licensees.
- Overseeing active licenses to ensure licensee compliance.
- Promoting and supporting faculty and student entrepreneurship.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Due to export control restrictions the successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien with a green card.
Education: Graduate degree in a biomedical field, chemistry, biology, biotechnology or related field.
Experience: Academic research, including at least one publication required. No previous technology transfer experience required.
Job Skills: Outstanding written and oral communication skills. Ability to quickly understand unfamiliar research and technologies. Ability to read and understand technical literature. Ability to multitask.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience: Familiarity with the processes involved in biomedical technology transfer and advancing technologies to their practical application.
