The University of Tennessee Research Foundation is proud to welcome its first-ever marketing and communications intern: Malena Pierce. This internship allows students to gain real-world marketing experience, develop key skills relevant to their field of study and learn about UTRF’s growing intellectual property portfolio.

UTRF is pleased to expand its internship program to include opportunities for those interested in marketing and communications, especially in the commercialization and tech transfer space,” said UTRF Interim President Maha Krishnamurthy. “We are happy to welcome Malena to our team.”

Originally from Elizabethton, Tennessee, Pierce is a senior public relations undergraduate with a minor in social entrepreneurship at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). She is interested in social advocacy work and plans to work in the nonprofit sector following graduation.

In her role at UTRF, Pierce helps to craft social media posts, create engaging graphics and collateral pieces, edit copy for feature articles and newsletters, and work on additional marketing projects.

I have really been enjoying the hands-on aspects of the position” said Pierce. “Piecing things together in a way that allows me to use my education and simultaneously further my understanding of the marketing process has really opened my eyes to what’s possible for me post-grad.”

Before arriving at UTRF, Pierce was unfamiliar with commercialization and tech transfer work. Yet, when her professor encouraged her to apply for the position, she was excited to gain new career experience and learn about UTRF’s work supporting UT innovation.

Even though I am not doing hands-on research, I still think the research is fascinating,” said Pierce. “It’s great to be behind the scenes supporting this work. I’ve always had an interest in research.”

Outside of work and school, Pierce is a squad leader in the Pride of the Southland Band at UTK, where she plays the clarinet. She said that performing in the marching band during the current Tennessee Volunteers football season has been extremely memorable and her favorite season yet!
