Dr. James Parrett is Staff Attorney at the University of Tennessee Research Foundation (UTRF). He is responsible for managing and licensing university technology, as well as preparing and reviewing research-related contracts, such as material transfer, research and confidentiality agreements. Although he works at UTRF’s UT Health Science Center office in Memphis, he provides legal support and advice to the entire UTRF licensing staff.
As a registered patent attorney, James provides strategic support for drafting and prosecuting patent applications on new disclosures from across the UT System. He has extensive experience with both healthcare and technology innovation in the private sector, having worked as a pharmacist, an intellectual property attorney, and a research scientist.
Prior to joining UTRF, he worked as the Manager of Pharmaceutical Development and Intellectual Property at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. James obtained his PharmD and MS in Pharmacy Administration from the University of Mississippi, his JD from William and Mary Law School, and his BS in Chemistry from James Madison University.
James is admitted to practice law in Delaware, Mississippi, Colorado, and Tennessee, as well as being a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. James is also a licensed pharmacist in Mississippi, Colorado, and Tennessee.
