The 1970s were a pivotal era for the UTRF, as we transitioned from our agricultural and mechanical roots to groundbreaking discoveries in biology, chemistry, and pharmaceuticals.
One notable venture was the creation of the Institute for Aural Rehabilitation, which sold innovative electro-acoustical equipment known as “Suvag.” This technology, developed in partnership with Yugoslavian inventor Petar Guberina, revolutionized therapy and training for the hearing impaired. Although we stopped selling Suvag in the 1980s, its impact was profound.

In 1979, we welcomed our first executive director, William A. Goodwin, marking a new chapter in our journey. A self-study committee highlighted UTRF’s crucial role not just as a patent holder, but as a vital bridge between the university and the public.
