The 1980s were a decade of significant expansion and groundbreaking achievements for UTRF. This era saw the enhancement of our Board of Directors to include representatives from each UT campus, university-wide administration, business leaders, and government officials, ensuring a diverse and inclusive leadership team.
Key milestones included:
- 1980: W. Ken Stair became our executive director, and we initiated the Mid-South Archaeological Center, delving into our rich historical and cultural heritage.
- 1982: Preston Dorsett’s pivotal discoveries led to the development of a test to detect rubella virus-specific antibodies in humans, paving the way for the founding of Viral Antigens, Inc., now known under the Meridian Life Sciences brand. This innovation has had a lasting impact on public health!
- 1983: We welcomed a new executive director, Kenneth W. Heathington, to the UTRC board, and Ann Roberson took on the role of assistant director and legal counsel, strengthening our leadership and legal framework.
Join us in celebrating this era of dynamic growth and remarkable innovation at UTRF!
