"Lux-Lite" - Bioluminescent proteins for Real-Time applications

About:

Bioluminescent proteins, proteins that allow living organisms to produce light energy, are being investigated for their usefulness in a wide array of scientific fields. Bioluminescent proteins have been found to be useful as bio-reporters, lighting up when they come into contact with a target substance, logic gates in bio-computing, components in bio-electronic devices and bio-markers of different types. Researchers at the University of Tennessee have modified lux-based nucleic acid and vector combinations to create a variety of lux proteins that exhibit a shorter bioluminescent duration. This makes them desirable in a multitude of applications consisting of real-time or temporally responsive bio-sensing, bio-computing, and lux array technologies.
