Let's say you are a faculty member, and you have come up with an invitation that you think is so compelling that you might want to start a business based on it. Before you make that decision, there are several things to think about:

  • Starting your own company usually takes more time and effort than anyone expects. Do you have enough time to devote the effort required to get the business off the ground? Or would you rather be a technical advisor and let someone with experience make it happen?
  • It usually takes more money than you expect, too! Do you have sources of funds? Are you willing to search for investors to help launch and operate the business?
  • Your employment contract with the university must be considered. Could there be a conflict of interest if you're employed at the university?

This section deals with these and other topic areas that aspiring entrepreneurs should consider before the business is created.
